[ Description ]

A vinyl packaging concept made for the Vaughan Oliver Album Cover Competition. The sleeve uses a lenticular slat-print technique, so the artwork shifts and reveals a different image depending on the angle you view it from. Reviewed by Luke Powell as part of the process.

RESEARCH AND SOLUTION

CONCLUSION

Getting the lenticular effect to actually work was by far the hardest part of this project. With three faces to the print, that meant three separate images had to align and separate cleanly at the right viewing angles, not just two, which multiplied how precise the slat structure needed to be. It's not something you can eyeball, it took constant testing and adjusting before it held together as an actual working effect rather than a rough approximation. A huge amount of the work on this project never shows up in the final image at all, it's in the structure underneath it.

What I learned was how much discipline a physical format demands compared to designing for a screen. There's no undo once it's printed and cut, so every decision had to be right before production, not fixed after the fact. Getting three images to work in one physical trick changed how I think about designing for print generally, treating the material and the technique as part of the concept from the very start, not something to solve at the end.
